AzoresTravel to, and within, the Azores
There are regular scheduled international flights from
  • Boston, Faro, Frankfurt, Lisbon, London, Montreal, Porto and Providence to Ponta Delgada,
  • Toronto to Terceira,
  • Lisbon to Sao Miguel, Terceira and to Faial.
There are internal flights between the 9 main islands, generally in the summer. Also ferry connections are available, those between Sao Jorge, Faial and Pico involve short crossings and are fairly frequent (except in winter). Terceira is slightly more distant from these three islands (Sao Jorge to Terceira takes about 2h 30min.) and there are no winter ferries on this run.

If you are planning a private trip we can help you obtain flights to the Azores and within the Azores. There are daily flights from Lisbon to Ponta Delgada. From London there is one direct flight a week (on Tuesdays), departing from London Gatwick at 11.45 and arriving in Ponta Delgada at 14.10. It leaves Ponta Delgada at 06.15 landing back in London at 10.45.

EagleActivities
When planning your trip to the Azores it is worth bearing in mind that you must be careful in your choice of location if you want is beach holiday. There are a few excellent small beaches but most of the coast is rocky. To make up for this many hotels by the coast have swimming pools.

The islands also offer a variety of other activities: diving, whale and dolphin watching, fishing, paragliding, caving and bird-watching. Walkers should take care to use recommended walks only, few other walks are likely to be found. On Sao Miguel the luxuriant Himalayan Ginger plant has taken over many little used old paths. The paths that do exist are not too well-marked for walkers so good route descriptions are required. These are available in a variety of publications. A list of these will be sent with your predeparture information including a summary of walks on your chosen islands.

Please contact us for further information about islands and activities available. Please specify in your enquiry which activities interest you.

Note Both our guided 8 day trels are available as private trips - either guided or unguided, on any dates suitable to you. See 8 days Sao Miguel trek and 4 Islands and Pico Ascent.

Accommodation
There is a good variety of accommodation on the islands. On this website we have only a limited selection to give you an idea of what is available. We only include the accommodation that we use for our walking trips for which we use 3 or 4-star hotels. On Sao Miguel these are the Hotel do Colégio (a modern 4-star hotel located in the historical centre of Ponta Delgada using in a restored 19th-century building rich in architectural, historical and cultural interest) and the Terra Nostra at Furnas.

On Terceira we recommend the Angra Hotel centrally located in Angra do Heroismo (itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site). On Faial the Fayal Hotel located in Horta, the Pico Hotel on Pico. On Sao Jorge accommodation is limited and we can recommend two guesthouses as well as the Sao Jorge Hotel. Please contact us for more information. Although we can offer full-board or half-board accommodation we recommend going out to restaurants for occassional meals and therefore generally suggest accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis.
