There is such diversity in scenery, people and geography in East Africa that it seems almost impossible to create an itinerary that does not leave out too much. We feel that an itinerary which includes the great peaks of Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest, provides one of the best ways to appreciate this wonderful diversity within a reasonable period of time.

The Chogoria route is scenically the most rewarding way of ascending Mt Kenya. There are beautiful views into the Gorges Valley, lined with dramatic cliffs, with the head waters of the Nithi River cascading over a series of waterfalls. At the head of the valley the main peaks of Lenana, Nelion and Batian dominate the skyline while the emerald green waters of Lake Michaelson glisten below the vantage point near Hall Tarns, a sheer cliff some 300m high. 6 days allows more time for acclimatisation and the opportunity of completing the high level walk around the main peaks. This walk provides spectacular views of the main summit area. We aim to climb to Point Lenana, the highest of Mount Kenya's peaks which can be reached without technical climbing. Mount Kenya.

Then, after a night in Nairobi, we drive across into Tanzania to tackle Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. It comprises two main summits, the craggy Mawenzi, 5149m, and the 'flat-topped', glaciated Kibo, 5896m. Our route, although not the easiest, can be tackled by a fit mountain walker and it takes in some of the best scenery Kili has to offer. It approaches Kibo from the south-west, up beautiful ridges overloooking deep valleys (Barrancos) and then traverses along the "Southern Circuit" beneath the the cliffs, screes and glaciers of Kibo. On the Machame route you will sleep in tents and eat in a mess tent.

Detailed Dossier | Trip Summary

The Chogoria Route on Mt. Kenya takes us up through natural forest and moorland to walk around the peaks area and ascend Pt Lenana. Our ascent of Kilimanjaro is by the Machame Route.
In towns we use high standard hotels, on the mountains camping in two-man, double-skin tents. The walking is generally tough and at high altitude but it is fully porter supported.
Optional safari extensions available.
