Introduction

Physical fitness and previous mountaineering experience are crucial if you choose the Northern route. It is a longer and harder route than the Southern routes. We require participants to be experienced in walking in crampons, using ice-axe and with rope work.. This trip is not a climbing course though there will be our guide who will definitely instruct the participants mainly about safety precautions and will make sure that all of them can walk on the glacier correctly. The participants will have some time for practicing self arrest.

Elbrus ascent from the North does not have cable ways, snowcats nor hotels. It is wild, more adventurous and can be more interesting.. There is however some infrastructure: tented base camp (2500m) and base camp with shelter(3760m). There are many interesting acclimatisation walks such as to Stone Mushrooms, Djili-Su Mineral springs, Silver Spring, two waterfalls and a Natural Bridge). North route is an authentic mountaineering or a real expedition route rather than a normal trip from the South. It is a wilder, more adventurous and interesting route. Please note: Participants carry their own personal equipment from Base Camp to the North Hut. Porters carry the communal equipment and food.

If you are not fit enough or have poor previous mountaineering experience we strongly recommend one of the routes from the South!

Terrorism and your Security
The Caucasus have recently been on some countries' Office of Foreign Affairs "not recommended to travel to lists" (eg UK).Many countries have no restrictions and the area remains a popular international tourist destination. The Elbrus area has so far been hardly affected by terrorist activities and at present we expect to continue running trips here as we have done for the last fifteen years. We do monitor the situation and do appreciate insurance complications may arise if you are traveling to the area details. After making your booking, should the situation in the area deteriorate to the extent that we have to cancel, alter or curtail the trip at short notice, we will refund all monies paid other than those associated with non-refundable expenses such as flight deposits or payments.

UK citizens, and others, may wish to discuss insurance implications and solutions with us.

Flights
We advise Aeroflot flights via the Moscow airport SVO1 for this programme.
