Access to the Pamir mountains, Fann Mountains and Western Tien Shan mountains is at present best through Tashkent in Uzbekistan, from where internal flights to Bukhara, Samarkand, Andijan, Bishkek and Dushanbe are available. Most major mountain base camps can be reached by road but a helicopter is useful to cut out the long approaches to the mountains of the Central Pamir such as Peak Communism.
